10 ways to implement CRM on a tight budget

by Mike Boysen
(Atlanta, GA)

This article by MyCustomer.com is a classic software focused article. And I simply cannot let it go unchallenged (my site is the strongest challenge so this will be quick).

Get your requirements carefully mapped out first

I'm guessing they are talking about things like "I need a button that will create a list and make MS Word send an email". Folks, CRM is a strategy. This isn't even a tactic. It's about end users at whatever level of the organization requesting features that only serve them. Please start at the top!

You don't need to go for premium brands

I agree, brand isn't important....once you have developed a comprehensive CRM strategy. However, talking about price at all is falling into the trap so many have fallen into before. It's not about the software!

SaaS is not by definition cheaper

Who cares. If you develop an effective CRM business case that has HUGE economic benefit to your company, the price of the software is going to be miniscule. I'm more worried about the consultants charging you time and materials for the project!

Shop around

For a good CRM consultant. Not software.

Negotiate well

Listen to your experienced CRM consultant, not your IT director. After all, this is about taking your busines to the next level, not implementing software.

Don't overload on software

Actually, don't think about software at all.

Keep it simple to start with

I agree. Start by developing simple economic outcomes you would like to achieve. Something that is measureable.

Take on more yourself

Are you an expert in CRM? Then I suggest you find one. Your looking for ROI, not how to waste the least amount of cash.

Rent a developer

ROFL!

Use third parties

"You don't have to use the vendor for everything". I assume this is a software vendor. What does a software vendor know about delivering high impact CRM strategies to a business? They sell software!

Wow, I didn't think a CRM oriented site would still be talking about software and nothing else.

But, for the most part I agree. The software salesman put on pretty slick presentations these days and many don't think about the planning until it's already implemented. "OK, now how do we use it?"
