Customer Relationship Marketing

You Don't Have a Marketing Plan?

In my world, CRM definitely does not stand for Customer Relationship Marketing. Marketing is an area that has lagged considerably in the CRM software world.

I should disclose that I've spent a large part of my career in the middle market. However, I've been in some larger enterprises as well, and it's pretty evident that the marketing people don't work with the same systems that the sales and service people do.

In these cases, I fail to see how you can say that your marketing is based on a customer relationship? Having many functional customer relationships means many possible marketing outcomes...and total customer confusion, lowered customer value, and minimal customer loyalty.

Many companies tend to be made up of silos. These can be business units, product groups or functional departments; but the bottom line is that these silos do not communicate well with each other. They also operate under a different set of objectives since they don't communicate will with each other.

Many years as a CRM consultant has reinforced my belief that an effective CRM implementation is more than a technical checklist. It's also more than a software and feature focused project manager with all the special accreditations and certifications. You can be super efficient at the latest implementation methodologies, but if you've missed the boat as a consultant for your client, what value have you really delivered?

Integrating Marketing with the rest of your business

Effective marketing is something that every business needs to do in order to achieve success. Customer relationship marketing is an integral part of the entire CRM strategy. The idea that you need to know your customer to increase that customer's loyalty is what the relationship piece is all about. For a marketer, this means collecting data and if your organization does not do this with the same objectives across all the silos, then your marketing results will pay the price

How to Start Customer Relationship Marketing

A company that wishes to excel in their marketing efforts needs to do a few basic, common sense things. For example, decisions are made based on the input and analysis of information. Therefore, the following items are the basic collection points your business needs:

  • Collect demographic information about their customers
  • Track interactions with your customer; such as web visits, emails, phone calls, newsletter responses, etc.
  • Track marketing initiatives and campaigns
  • Track sales or other business monetization methods over time

The Benefits of Customer Relationship Marketing

What Who WhenFrankly, the benefits are going to vary depending on the approach you take to marketing decisions. There are a few different theories out there and I write about the on this site (check the related articles area on the right). There are marketers that believe demographics are the key to everything. There are others that believe analyzing customer activity is the key to everything. However you decide to proceed, there are three main benefits that should be the outcome of your marketing analysis

  • You will know what to say
  • You will know who to say it to
  • You will know when to say it

These are important considerations given that most companies have a finite marketing budget. The surest way to failure is to throw all of your marketing dollars at everyone. Not only will you ensure that your company achieves an immeasurably low ROI, you will have defeated the whole point of knowing your customer.

Customer relationship marketing can add a great deal of new opportunity to your business because it focuses on the customers that are most likely to respond to a message. This is because you have identified what you need to say, and when to say it. The act of responding is a signal that you have said, or offered, the right thing at the right time to the right customer.

Just imagine if you could predict when a customer was about to defect, and head them off at the pass? Now, that is what I would call effective customer relationship marketing. Check out my other articeles and you just might find a gem that jump starts your business.
