I've been involve with many efforts to improve workflow thru an organization and the goals vary. Some organizations are fixated on controlling costs to enhance their margins. But I prefer working with those that are making improvements for the benefit of their customers. Their loyalty will enhance the margins as a by-product of your great service. Everyone wins.

Some processes can look linear on paper. But think about this. What if your process is constantly being interrupted by your customer who is looking for some kind of an update. They certainly have a need for this information in many cases, so ignoring them will not enhance their loyalty.

Workflows can run independently to help achieve the same goal. For instance, an internal customer service rep may be moving an application thru the internal process and simultaneously, your workflow software could be generating automated communications to your customer to give them a friendly update on the status, who is working on it, and how to contact them. Most likely, they won't be contacted, because your workflow has already handled it.
